Comparing to RGP lens, toric soft contact lens does not have a wide range of specifications to choose from. Manufacturers could only make what is suitable for the majority of the population since it may not be practical to manufacture bases on all the prescriptions out there. Thus, patient could only find what’s close to his or her prescription. In addition, toric soft contact lens may rotate slightly in the eye causing unstable vision for some people, and also it would not be able to correct irregular astigmatism.
A 28 year-old female patient with high astigmatism has come for medical advice. With a subjective refraction of -7.00 -3.00 x 180 OD and -7.00 -2.00 x 180 OS, the best-corrected visual acuity were 1.0 for both eyes with spectacle. Based on the corneal topography (Figure 1 and 2), the curvature on the vertical axis of the cornea appeared to be steeper than the horizontal axis and the pattern looks like the keratoconus. This patient was unable to find suitable toric soft contact lenses and therefore decided to fit limbal RGP lenses. With limbal RGP lenses, the patient could have a stable vision of 1.0 for both eyes respectively (Figure 3 and 4).
