A 61 year-old female patient diagnosed with dry eye syndrome for more than 20 years and had come to seek medication attention upon experiencing discomfort and pain in her eyes. She had tried different ways to relief dryness and pain from using regular artificial tears to non-preservative ones, and was also treated with punctal plug. However, none of these were effective and thus she decided to fit the limbal RGP lenses as the soft contact lenses were contraindicated to the dry eye.
For the traditional RGP lens, the size is small that cannot cover the whole cornea entirely (Figure 1). Then, it is difficult to keep the tear between the cornea and contact lens. The limbal size RGP lens is bigger in which a space can be designed at the back surface of the lens. The tear can be stored in this space between the cornea and contact lens and keep the cornea moist. The symptom of dryness may be improved. After fitting the limbal RGP lenses (Figure 2 and 3), the patient felt better subjectively.
Figure 1. The size of traditional RGP lens is small that cannot cover the whole cornea entirely. It is difficult to keep the water between the cornea and contact lens. By the way, the movement of the RGP lens is rather big that make the wearer feeling uncomfortable.
Figure 2. The patient's right eye fitted with limbal RGP lens. The green colored area showed the tear between the cornea and contact lens which keep the cornea moist.
